The Beginning Stuff

Solo Requirements for Student Pilot
  • CFR 61.87​

Flight Lesson 1: Preflight and Basic Maneuvers (1.5 hours)
  • Objective: Perform preflight inspection and basic flight maneuvers.
  • ACS Reference: Area II (Preflight Procedures)
  • Resources: AFH Chapter 2 (Ground Ops), Chapter 3 (Flight Maneuvers)
  • Tasks:
    • Preflight inspection (aircraft and POH), Cessna 172N
    • Straight-and-level flight, turns, climbs, descents, use of trim
    • Aileron position during taxi
    • Use of checklists
  • Goal: Familiarity with aircraft controls and preflight process.
Flight Lesson 2-3: Slow Flight and Stalls (1.5 hours each)
  • Objective: Master slow flight and stall recovery.
  • ACS Reference: Area VII (Slow Flight and Stalls)
  • Resources: AFH Chapter 5
  • Read AFH Read Airplane Flying handbook pg 5-10 starting at ‘Performing the Slow Flight Maneuver’ to pg 5-18 up to ‘Secondary Stall’
  • Tasks:
    • Slow flight:  MCA (Min Controllable Airspeed) configuration
    • Power-off  and Power-on stalls
    • Stall recognition and recovery
  • Goal: Confidence in low-speed handling.
Flight Lesson 4-5: Ground Reference Maneuvers (1.5 hours each)
  • Objective: Perform ground reference maneuvers accurately.
  • ACS Reference: Area VIII (Ground Reference Maneuvers)
  • Resources: AFH Chapter 7
  • Tasks:
    • Rectangular course, turns around a point, S-turns
    • Wind correction techniques
  • Goal: Precision in wind-affected maneuvers.

Flight Lesson 6-8: Takeoffs, Landings, and Traffic Pattern (1.5 hours each)
  • Objective: Execute normal and emergency takeoffs and landings.
  • ACS Reference: Area IV (Takeoffs, Landings, Go-Arounds)
  • Resources: AFH
    • Chapter 6 Takeoffs and Climbs,
    • Chapter 9 Approaches and Landings
  • Tasks:
    • Normal and crosswind takeoffs/landings (see Chap 6 and 9 links above)
    • ​Phraseology when approaching and/or landing at KSGS.
    • Phraseology when departing KSGS
    • Go-arounds  172N example
    • Forward Slip:  Chap 9 AFH
    • Passenger Brief
    • Pre-takeoff Brief including the Emergency Brief
  • Goal: Consistent traffic pattern operations, adherence to centerline and always touchdown on the mains first (no three point landings nor landing on the nosewheel first).
